The 28-year-old reveals the Brazilian made him fall in love with football and also targets victory in Saturday’s El Gran Derbi

Sevilla and Betis slug it out for the first time this season in Saturday’s El Gran Derbi – the most hotly anticipated fixture of the year. And Real Betis’s Cristian Tello and Sevilla FC’s Sergio Escudero break down how much the game means to Goal.

Q: What were your thoughts when you used to watch #ElGranDerbi (the derby between Sevilla FC and Real Betis) on television?

ESCUDERO: Whenever I watched Sevilla face Betis on television, I was always bowled over by the wonderful atmosphere and the rivalry between two teams from the same city with vocal fan bases that always get behind their side. It’s one of the most fantastic derbies in world football.

TELLO: As current LaLiga Santander players in the top flight, we constantly think about the fact that we now get the opportunity to savour such atmospheres from the inside.

Q: How would you explain what Sevilla v Betis means to a foreigner?

ESCUDERO: It’s very difficult to explain the feeling that’s entrenched in the game, both at the club and among supporters… You have to be wearing one of the teams’ colours to be able to fully experience it.

TELLO: It’s a spectacular city derby because of the atmosphere and the rivalry between supporters, which is fantastic to see.

Q: If #ElGranDerbi were a film, what would it be?

ESCUDERO:  I think it would be Star Wars, the goodies against the baddies. Of course, that depends on your allegiances (laughter), but as far as we’re concerned, we’re the goodies and they’re the baddies, and it’s the other way round for them.

TELLO: I’d go for 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Q: What do you like the most about Seville?

ESCUDERO: Above all, the people, who’ve treated me so well since I arrived and have always given me everything.

TELLO: I agree. What I like the most is the people because of the way they follow their football and the passion with which they live their lives.

Q: Who is your idol?

ESCUDERO: As a youngster, I always looked up to Roberto Carlos, because of the position that he played in and the fact that he was such an attacking full-back.

TELLO: Since I was little, I’ve always really liked Fernando Torres because of his pace and movement. Now I’d go with [Lionel] Messi, who is undoubtedly the best player in the world.

Q: If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be?

ESCUDERO: If I weren’t a footballer, I’d have liked to have done something in sport. Maybe I’d be a coach or a PE teacher. It would certainly involve sport.

TELLO: I think I’d have also done something connected to sport. I’ve always really liked sport since I was little and if I hadn’t been lucky enough to become a footballer, I would’ve done something else in the same field.

Q: What’s your prediction for #ElGranDerbi?

Chelsea FC

Chelsea FC

Real manager Zinedine Zidane has admitted that his club could be in the market for players during the January window and Luiz, who is also interesting Manchester United, has been discussed as a potential target.

Chelsea are expected to make another move for Juventus wing-back Alex Sandro, who is rated at £60m, in January, a player they failed to land in the summer.

Luiz had a massive fall out with Conte after the Champions League draw with Roma at Stamford Bridge, when the manager was unhappy with the Brazilian’s reaction after being substituted.

There were further problems between the pair following the 3-0 defeat in Rome, after which Conte conducted a heated dressing-room inquest.

Luiz trained alone and was dropped for the 1-0 win over United after apparently questioning Conte’s tactics and he also missed games against West Brom and Liverpool, though was recalled for the Champions League win over Qarabag last week.

Luiz will also miss the clash with struggling Swansea at Stamford Bridge tonight after Conte revealed he had suffered a knee injury and doubts remain over the 30-year-old’s future at Chelsea.

Conte said: “I must be honest, in this moment it’s very difficult for me to answer how long David Luiz will be out. It will be up to the doctor to assess the situation very well and then to take the best decision for the player.”

Chelsea though would not sell Luiz in January unless they could find a replacement, with Conte already concerned about the depth of his squad. The Brazilian has just over 18 months left on his contract, after returning to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2016 in a £34million deal.

Conte made no secret of his unhappiness with Chelsea’s transfer dealing at that time and the club are expected to bring in at least one or two players in January.

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is expected to be another target.

Chelsea go into Wednesday’s clash against Swansea unbeaten in their past five Premier League matches. And Swansea manager Paul Clement returns to the club where he was once a coach with a ringing endorsement of Alvaro Morata.

Clement, who worked with Morata at Real Madrid, had no doubts he would come good.

“He’s strong, quick and good in the air,” he said.

BIRMINGHAM — Kevin De Bruyne believes Manchester City are entering a crucial week for their ambitions for silverware this season.

City can guarantee a place in the last-16 of the Champions League with a draw away to Serie A leaders Napoli on Wednesday.

And they can guarantee a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League going into the international break on Sunday with a victory over Arsenal in a game which finishes before Manchester United, their closest rivals, face a difficult clash away to champions Chelsea.

“We know if we go to Napoli and win then we’ll have qualified — that would be a nice position,” De Bruyne told reporters.

“Then hopefully another good one against Arsenal and put some pressure on the rest of the teams.

“It’s important just to get qualified not about thinking about what it might mean, whether we could get a rest. If we are qualified, that is done.
Kevin De Bruyne is ready for an important stretch of matches.

“We might then have to think about finishing first or whatever but we know if we get a point or win, we are qualified.”

City extended their Premier League winning streak to eight games on Saturday with a 3-2 win away to West Bromwich Albion.

They have drawn once and not been beaten this season but De Bruyne insists it is impossible for City to go all season without a defeat in the league.

“To go unbeaten? Well, it’s very hard. I don’t think it will be possible,” he said. “The level of competition is so high, in every team.

“It’s not like, with all respect, 10 or 15 years ago where you have a couple of teams that won’t win against the top teams. Now, every game is hard and you need to be mentally there.

“And with the Champions League and all the cups, there will be a game where maybe we are a little bit less and maybe lose. But as long as it keeps going, it’s good.”
